Ecohydrological Study for Kikbeek and Mechelse Heide
Ecohydrological study: Investigation of the effects of higher water levels in the Kikbeek pond on surrounding groundwater-dependent vegetation and analysis of additional rewetting measures in the habitat directive areas Mechelse Heide, Ziepbeekvallei, Neerharerheide, and Asbeek. The aim is to research the impact on groundwater levels and ecological boundary conditions due to water level increases in the Kikbeek pond and hydrological restoration measures in the mentioned areas to maximize the restoration and conservation of groundwater-dependent vegetation. A climate-robust system is to be achieved without compromising critical infrastructure (e.g., E314 motorway) and the long-term stability of the Berg quarry and Kikbeek pond. Hydrological and ecological model predictions are to be used to investigate scenarios for water level increases in the Kikbeek pond and to develop wet nature in the Mechelse Heide habitat directive area.
