Restoration and New Uses for the Venetian Shipyards in Heraklion, Crete
Restoration and functional integration of the complex of the Western and Eastern Venetian Shipyards in Heraklion, Crete: The listed building complex (historical monuments since 1947) includes the Western Shipyards (Arsenali Vecchi, built 1556) with four vaulted spaces and a Western Warehouse, as well as the Eastern Shipyards (Arsenali Nuovi and Nuovissimi, built 1608) with one vaulted space, the Salt Warehouse (a single-room vaulted building), and the Zane Cistern (two vaulted spaces). For the Western Shipyards, works include: masonry reinforcement (injections, infills), pointing, stone cleaning and conservation, plaster conservation, new roof covering, moisture control with a drainage system. New installations comprise glazing, display cases, a reception desk, an amphitheater, lighting poles, new electromechanical installations, and new flooring. For the Western Warehouse, works include: masonry reinforcement (injections, infills, reconstruction), pointing, reconstruction of the damaged vault, and creation of a walkable roof. New installations comprise window frames, benches and equipment, partitions, and sanitary facilities, with new electromechanical installations and flooring. For the Eastern Shipyards, works include: masonry and vault reinforcement (injections, infills, tie rods), pointing, stone cleaning and conservation, plaster conservation, new roof covering, floor modification to ensure access to the adjacent Zane Cistern, railings, parapets, flooring, and lighting. For the Zane Cistern, works include: masonry and vault reinforcement (injections, infills), pointing, stone cleaning and conservation, plaster conservation, reconstruction of the vault covering. New installations comprise glazing, corridors, stairs, platforms, a theater, sanitary facilities, and new electromechanical installations. For the Salt Warehouse, works include: masonry reinforcement (injections, infills, tie rods), pointing, stone cleaning and conservation, plaster conservation, new roof covering, and parapet repair. Also planned are the construction of wooden interior equipment and metal structures for the operation of the space for temporary exhibitions, as well as new electromechanical installations with a disabled lift and flooring. For the surrounding area and the monument roofs, works include: landscaping with flooring, railings, stairs, platforms, elevated levels/platforms, shelters, lighting. Information signs for the public and in Braille will also be installed. further items as per the tender documents.
