Analysis Equipment for ZMT's Marine Carbonate System

Supply of analysis equipment for measuring and determining at least 3 out of 4 parameters of the marine carbonate system: pCO2 analyzer with equilibrator in underway mode; TIC analyzer for liquid samples with a precision of less than +/- 2 µmol/kg at an average concentration of 2,000 µmol C/kg; pH analyzer; alternatively, titrator for Total Alkalinity with a precision of less than +/- 2 µmol/kg at an average concentration of approx. 2,200 µmol C/kg. The equipment will be used in the ZMT chemistry laboratory, on ship-based expeditions, and on expeditions to tropical partner countries for the determination of inorganic carbon and other carbonate system-relevant parameters, in compliance with the standards of the Global Climate Observing Systems (GCOS) and Global Ocean Observation System (GOOS). The detailed description is included in the tender documents.

Mass Spectrometer with Peripheral Devices for the ZMT Chemistry Laboratory

Delivery of an EA-IR-MS with peripheral devices elemental analyzer and TC analyzer for the ZMT chemistry laboratory. The device is used for the determination of carbon, nitrogen, and their isotopes to analyze the isotopic composition of carbon and nitrogen. This is relevant for studies on climate change and biodiversity, particularly concerning the origin of carbon and nitrogen in coastal ecosystems (Blue Carbon), nitrogen in the sea (N-fixation), tracking anthropogenic nitrogen from agriculture and aquaculture in the sea (eutrophication, damage to seagrasses and coral reefs), and for food web investigations. These flows are to be linked with natural controls, causes, and drivers of coastal and hinterland development (e.g., land use changes, political changes, behavioral changes).
