Excavator Work, Timber Harvesting, and Local Transport for Nature Management in Nature Reserves (North Savo)
Excavator work, mechanical clearings, and whole tree harvesting, including short-distance transport in nature conservation areas: The works are primarily part of the Helmi habitat program. Excavator work may include the restoration of drained areas by blocking ditches, using dam structures, surface embankments, and other necessary measures to restore the water balance of drained peatlands. Additionally, excavator work may involve creating fire lanes and performing tasks in traditional biotopes and sun-exposed environments. Mechanical clearings include felling and cutting trees with an energy grapple. Whole tree harvesting includes felling, cutting, stacking, and short-distance transport. Clearing and whole tree harvesting are often performed in drained peatlands before ditch blocking, where trees along ditch lines that would hinder filling are cleared. Depending on the work site, the cleared wood is either left on site or transported away. The restoration excavator work and whole tree harvesting may also include other excavator work, mechanical clearing, whole tree harvesting, or short-distance transport related to nature conservation and falling within the scope of Metsähallitus Nature Services.
