Structural Engineering for Virginia Depot Energy Center
Structural engineering according to § 51 HOAI (2021) for the new construction of the energy center in the Virginia Depot geothermal project. The energy center generates up to 110 MW/th district heating from renewable energies and is supplied with geothermal heat via a thermal water pipeline of approx. 350 m length. Further functional areas include the 110 kV customer facility with MV system and frequency converters, LV main distribution with transformers/VFDs, heat exchangers and large heat pumps with thermal water and district heating distribution and general piping, as well as chillers with recoolers on the roof and social rooms on the upper floors. A PV system is to be planned on the green roof. The footprint is approx. 3,300 m², the gross floor area approx. 15,000 m² and the gross volume approx. 77,000 m³, with a wall height of approx. 24 m and E+4 stories (incl. 2 intermediate floors), plus a partial basement. The room structure includes large halls with high load assumptions (e.g., heat pumps, recoolers, transformers). The planning of temporary insertion openings and construction states for heavy equipment (e.g., heat pump, 110 kV transformer) is required and must be coordinated with the object planner and specialist planners; the foundation conditions are challenging due to temporary use as a gravel pit and landfill.
