Architectural Competition for Conceptual Design: Redevelopment and Revitalization of Trimontium Pedestrian Underpass, Plovdiv

Development of a conceptual design for the redevelopment and revitalization of the Trimontium pedestrian underpass and adjacent urban area in Plovdiv: The territorial scope includes the underground space, above-ground access points, and adjacent public spaces, specifically the Trimontium pedestrian underpass (parcels 56784.521.1382 and 56784.523.4022) in the Central District on Tsar Boris III Obedinitel Boulevard. The competition aims to acquire a conceptual design as a basis for awarding a subsequent technical design phase. The first-place participant will receive an invitation to negotiate without prior publication (pursuant to Art. 79, para. 1, item 9 of the Public Procurement Act) for the award of a public contract for the development of an investment project. The design should offer a comprehensive concept integrating the underground and above-ground space into a unified, legible, and safe urban environment, and propose a new tourist information center. The architectural project must propose a holistic, sustainable, and visionary architectural concept for the underpass opposite the Trimontium Hotel and its adjacent territories, with the main goal of achieving full and meaningful integration of the underground and above-ground space. A critical aspect is the requirement to demonstrate deep respect and responsible attitude towards the complex and multi-layered archaeological stratigraphy (Plovdiv's historical heritage/ancient Philippopolis), finding a balance between modern architectural intervention and the preservation, exhibition, and interpretation of the cultural-historical layers. The scope also includes a proposal for the placement and construction of a new, modern, and functional tourist information center, which should be an integral part of the overall concept, serving as a gateway to the city's archaeological values and a key point for welcoming and orienting visitors. A solution is required that transforms the underpass from a purely transit space into a significant urban destination and cultural highlight. The competition includes awards for the top three participants and two commendations at the jury's discretion. It aims to acquire a conceptual design that will serve as the basis for awarding a public contract for the design of a technical and execution-ready investment project according to Art. 79, para. 1, item 9 of the Public Procurement Act. It is an open, international, and anonymous competition, open to all interested parties without restrictions on legal form, nationality, or territorial scope, with participants' anonymity maintained until the final classification of the competition projects by the jury, further items as per the tender documents.
