Redesign of Kornhaus Museum

Heritage-compliant renovation, modernization, and conversion of the Kornhaus in Kirchheim unter Teck: The four-story building (built 1540-53) with a footprint of approx. 40.80 x 14.70 m, eaves height approx. 11.30 m or 11.70 m, and ridge height approx. 20.30 m or 20.50 m includes 3 full floors, a two-level attic, a full basement with a vault, and a new basement construction with technical rooms. The usable area is approx. 1,800 sqm, gross floor area approx. 3,430 sqm, and gross volume approx. 14,580 cbm. The overall construction project is carried out in 2 phases: Phase 1 involves the renovation, repair, and modernization of the ground floor to the attic, including extending the first escape route (east staircase) and an elevator to the basement. Phase 2 involves the renovation of the natural stone vault in the cellar after the removal of the combined heat and power unit. The building will be upgraded in terms of building physics and fire protection. Special requirements arise from heritage protection, necessitating a sensitive approach to original building fabric, repair and restoration measures, and the protection and preservation of original materials and constructions. Archaeological excavations are required for a new external staircase (basement to ground floor). Site access is via Martinskirchplatz, with constrained storage areas. The building is located in seismic zone 0 (DIN 4149: 2005-04 / 1981-04). Ventilation technology includes a central air handling unit in the attic with approx. 8,000–10,000 m³/h air volume, 3 ventilation shafts across all floors, approx. 400 m of air ducts (spiral-seam + rectangular ducts), approx. 40 long-throw nozzles (ground floor – 2nd floor), and approx. 20 swirl diffusers (attic). Fire protection and cable routing include 2 main shaft systems across all levels and approx. 30 fire-rated penetrations.
